Jaw Pain, Headaches or Clenching? Understanding TMJ Dysfunction and How Massage Therapy Can Help.

If you’ve ever experienced jaw pain, clicking when you open your mouth, or headaches that seem to start around your temples, you may be dealing with TMJ dysfunction.

Many people live with these symptoms for a long time without realising that the jaw muscles and surrounding areas could be the cause. It’s something I see quite often in my clinic offering massage therapy in Winchester, and people are often surprised by how much tension can build up around the jaw.


What Is TMJ Dysfunction?

TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, which connects your jaw to your skull. You have one on each side of your face, just in front of your ears.

TMJ dysfunction occurs when the muscles around this joint become tight, strained or out of balance. This can affect how your jaw moves, and may cause pain or discomfort not only in the jaw itself but also in the surrounding areas of the body.

You can check to see what your jaw is doing- cup your jaw with both hands, fingers tips close to your ears. Gentle open and close your mouth slowly a few times. Do you hear any clicking or popping? Does your jaw stay central or does it swing to one side?

Because these muscles are closely connected with the neck, shoulders and nervous system, symptoms can sometimes show up in unexpected places.


Common Signs of TMJ Dysfunction

People often assume jaw problems would only affect the jaw, but TMJ dysfunction can present in several ways.

Common symptoms include:

  • Jaw pain or tightness

  • Clicking, popping or grinding sounds when opening the mouth

  • Pain when chewing or yawning

  • Headaches or migraines

  • Earache without infection

  • Toothache without infection

  • Neck and shoulder tension

  • Dizziness or vertigo

  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

  • Facial tension or fatigue

Some people also notice that their jaw feels tired or uncomfortable by the end of the day, especially if they spend long hours concentrating or working at a desk.


Why TMJ Problems Are Often Linked to Stress

The jaw is one of the many places where the body often holds stress and emotional tension.

When we feel under pressure, it’s common to clench the jaw or grind the teeth, sometimes without even realising it. Over time, this repeated tension can lead to tight muscles and irritation around the jaw joint.

This is why TMJ dysfunction is often linked with:

  • Stress and anxiety

  • Busy or demanding lifestyles

  • Poor sleep

  • Long hours at a desk or computer

When these factors combine, the muscles around the jaw can become overworked and painful.


Other Possible Causes of TMJ Dysfunction

While stress is a very common factor, there are several other things that can contribute to TMJ dysfunction, including:

  • Injury to the head, neck or jaw

  • Dental work or changes to your bite

  • Poor posture

  • Teeth grinding during sleep

  • Pregnancy or hormonal changes

  • Chronic health conditions

  • COVID-19 or Long COVID

Often it’s a combination of factors rather than a single cause.


How Massage Therapy Can Help Jaw Pain

Massage therapy can be very helpful in reducing the muscular tension associated with TMJ dysfunction.

Treatment focuses on the muscles that influence jaw movement, including those in the:

  • Jaw and face

  • Neck

  • Shoulders

  • Upper back

By gently releasing tension in these areas, massage therapy may help to:

  • Reduce jaw pain and tightness

  • Improve movement in the jaw

  • Ease headaches and facial tension

  • Reduce neck and shoulder discomfort

  • Support the nervous system to relax

For issues that have been present for a long time, it can take a few sessions for the body to fully release these patterns.


When Should You Seek Help for Jaw Pain?

Who wants to live with constant pain? It can be draining and very distracting. Please do seek support if you notice:

  • Clicking or popping that is becoming uncomfortable
